Russell Leedy is a singer, songwriter and producer crafting songs in many genres of music including rock, soul, jazz, gospel and country. His first recordings were in California. He was produced by Canyon Crest Records and released 4 songs under their direction. Russell then traveled and lived in Miami, Florida for over 10 years. Portland’s own, Rony is one of the most battle-tested rappers in the Pacific Northwest. The street lyricist is a real-life rapper. Moreover, he does not know how to talk about anything he has not seen or done himself. Rip City is not the easiest place to come up from. Therefore, everyone in the city has to hustle to ensure that they do not go without. From the outside looking in, fans believe that Amine is the Portland rapper to look up to. After talking with Rony and listening to interviews from his peers from the city, that is not totally true. How ‘Everybody Party’ by Posse Unit became the sound of the summer!
Currently being played on over 150 radio stations around the world, and going Top Ten on iTunes Pop chart in South Africa just last week, Ben Hill & Posse Unit are flying high after scoring the biggest hit of the summer ‘Everybody Party’. For songwriter Ben Hill, it’s a dream come true.
We caught up with him in the West London offices of his record company Trojan Donkey, to talk about how he accidentally stumbled upon a hit single.
How are you feeling?
‘I’m ok, I slept well. I can see. I can walk. I can hear. I always say, that if you’re not in the back of an ambulance, be thankful’.
How did Everybody Party get written?
‘I was at a friend’s house for dinner. He’s a great chef. One of the best in the whole of the West Country. Anyway, he was cooking this meal, but at the same time, he was playing me this new beat he had been working on. It sounded great! So then I put the keyboard part over it, but we need a really catchy chorus, and thankfully the next day the melody arrived in my head. It was supposed to be released last summer, but something called Covid-19 rocked up, and any party was over pretty quickly after that’.
Did you think it would ever get this big?
‘I thought it had a good chance, we just needed some radio play. Thankfully, it was picked up on some major FM radio stations in the US early on. And then it just took off. It is even being played in Chile! I never thought it would be heard beyond our back garden! I’m also very thankful that I know a producer called Nick Evans. He would make my snoring sound good! So, I am very lucky. I am blessed. I’m actually off to see him this week to work on the follow-up single ‘I Love What Ya Got’. I’m having a blast’!

Folk Rock Singer Songwriter Jasmyn Gulyas Spreads Her Wings And Comes of Age On Her Own Terms With Debut Single “23”
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize
you wanted to pursue a career in it?
| feel like as long as my mind will take me back, | was writing original music and
poems to perform in front of my family and friends. Yes | still have those old song
books- and yes, they are hilarious. It sounds cliché, but | really do believe | was
born with this drive and passion to pursue the arts. In terms of music becoming
my career, that mind set happened after | graduated University. My focus is now
my passion, how cool is that?
On your current project, how did you come up with the concept?
23″ was the age where I started to question my lifestyle and | was feeling too
cought up in the mundane but busy routine | had created for myself. This song
embodies the constant inner narrative in my head of “follow your dreams, go for
it!” and “Let’s be realistic here…” When | wrote it, | finished it quickly- like it was
almost something I had to get off my chest and that had been built up for some
time. That’s why | think it’s so powerful, because it’s so honest.
What are some of your greatest challenges, and what is your greatest
attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
I not only put too much pressure on myself but also put too much on my plate at
the some time. Word of advice, not a good combo. But regardless of how tired |
am or how long of a week it has been, | always find the strength to get things
done. And when it comes to music, you’ve got to put the work in.
Are you the best at what you do in your opinion?
| learned a quote when doing a thesis paper on Saturday Night Live, that in
comedy ”…if you are the funniest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room” I
believe that applies to music as well. If you think you are the best, you aren’t
surrounding yourself with people who challenge you. | believe | have a gift for
writing and performing but you can always learn from the musicians around you,
and boy are their some amazing and talented musicians in Ottawa right now.
What are your plans for the near future?
More collaboration, more practise, more gigs and working with Jason Wilkinson at
Artist Alliance Company ( Young Wild & Free Studios) to produce and release
more music. There is a lot to look forward to.

Jason Wilkinson has helped me bring my small acoustic song to life and has given
me the time and patience | needed to do so. | would recommend him to anyone
needed that extra push to take their music to the next level, he’s incredible. Ryan
Parent- who did my music video for this song- is a creative genius. We worked so
well together and all the hard work paid off, it looks amazing. Thank you to my
family for always supporting my passion to pursue the arts and driving hours to
see my shows whenever | have them. | also have the best friends in the entire
WORLD who not only help promote me, come to every show but also really believe
in me. | don’t know what | would do without them.
tf you could change one thing about the current music industry, what would it
be?
There’s a lyric in my song that goes, “I’m feeling jaded, music scene saturated,
where standing out is in the way”. | think that the ability for everyone, everywhere
to release music on every platform is bittersweet. It’s that struggle to really stand
out as an artist nowadays.
